Kaguya-hime
An old man discovers a baby the size of a thumb inside a glowing bamboo stalk. He and his wife decide to raise the child and name her Kaguya-hime, which means “Princess of Light” in Japanese. As she grows up, the tiny little girl becomes a young woman of dazzling beauty. Numerous suitors come from all over the empire to ask for her hand, but the Princess rejects them by challenging them to perform an impossible task. When she finally discovers her celestial origins, Kaguya-hime leaves Earth in a shower of light and returns to her people.
For its first production aimed at young audiences, Compagnie Linga has chosen this ancient tale, known to all Japanese children. With clear, expressive movement that brings to life a kaleidoscope of emotions, this production gently explores the theme of otherness.
